Getting started

  1. In Google Docs, open Extensions → Figure Captions and References.
  2. Click an image once, then choose Caption selected image. Type the caption's text after "Figure 1:".
  3. For a table, click inside it and choose Caption table at cursor.
  4. To refer to a figure, click where the reference should go, open Insert cross-reference… and pick the caption.
  5. After moving or adding figures, choose Update numbers.

Common questions

"Images set to Wrap text can't be captioned yet"

Google Docs doesn't tell add-ons which wrapped image is selected. Click the image, choose In line in the bar under it, then caption it.

A reference says "Figure ?"

The caption it pointed to was deleted. Delete the reference, or insert a new one from the sidebar.

I copied a figure and its caption. Will the copy be numbered?

Yes. A "Figure 3: …" line right under an image (or "Table 3: …" right above a table) is picked up the next time numbers update.

Can I undo what the add-on did?

Yes. One Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) undoes a whole add-on action, and File → Version history keeps older versions.

Where do I enter my Pro license key?

Extensions → Figure Captions and References → Pro and license…, paste the key from your receipt email, and click Activate.

How do I cancel Pro?

Use the "Manage subscription" link in your receipt email. Pro keeps working until the end of the year you paid for. For a refund within 14 days of a payment, email us.
